cyanne is right, also use the college you go to. Chances are they have a job placement for graduates and reesume help. I know most where i live do that, it is free and a big help.
Don’t lie. If your last job relates in some way to this new job, include it definately. You don’t have to write on your resume what you have been doing for the years you have been a stay at home. They will ask you. Then you can delve into that topic.
You can use the below as a reference:
Your name
Contact info(address, phone, email)
Objective: Not always necessary-but since you haven’t been in Corp America last couple of years-it may help employers assess you before they meet you
Education: mention your current education here as well as previous if applicable
Last 2 jobs if applicable: List the one in 1997 and if you had one before that.
Skills: Maybe you can mention here if you use a program or can use a word to decsribe you handling your husbands finances.
The employer will obviously give you a chance to talk and in that time- you can tell them.
Resumes are extremely important, contrary to one answer. And I agree with the others, Homemaker is a very valid career. You have had to manage the household accounts, use effective time management skills, marketing research which products are best for your household, food planning and preparation, transportation coordinator for the kids, effectively manage family members through appointments, social events, school meetings, etc. … And you did all this without an executive assistant. Anyone who doesn’t consider all those qualities doesn’t deserve someone as dedicated as you. Good luck !!!
I would list any schooling while you were a homemaker to show that you were trying to better yourself. It shows that you can be a mom and work hard too without motherhood being a problem. Most companies like to see people who are responsible and can juggle family around work regardless if it is school or a full time job.
smcin728 had a great answer, I just want to reinforce that lying is a very bad idea! When you do your resume and employers ask about the gap in employment history, tell them you were on “extended maternity leave”. I had the same situation and it was accepted by every employer I interviewed with. Also, be sure to mention that you are acting office manager for your husbands company. This shows that you are current on handling paperwork and would need little adjustment time to settle in to the position. A homemaker is a full time position with varied position titles. You have been a marketing specialist, budget analyst, time manager, etc. Be sure to mention organizational skills too and good luck!
